Notre Dame Academy Announces New Head of School Kathryn Barr
Worcester, MA- On October 5th the Notre Dame Academy Board of Trustees, after a unanimous vote, has appointed Kathryn Woodson Barr as the Head of School at Notre Dame Academy. Mrs. Barr is the Academy’s first lay Head of School in history. Mrs. Barr, who has served as the interim head of school since July, was selected after an extensive search that began in January when Sr. Ann Morrison announced that she would be retiring at the end of the school year, after 42 years as principal. Mrs. Barr’s most recent appointment was as the Head of School for The Maine Girls’ Academy (formerly Catherine McAuley High School) in Portland, Maine. She also served as the Head of School for Highlands School in Birmingham, Alabama and the Head of the Lower School for the Grace-St. Luke’s Episcopal School in Memphis, Tennessee.
“On behalf of the Board of Trustees, Head of School Search Committee, and the Sisters of Notre Dame, we’re thrilled with the opportunity to have someone as wonderful as Kathryn join our faculty as our Head of School,” said Michael Keegan, President of the Notre Dame Academy Board of Trustees. “We look forward to all the great things she has in mind working with the terrific faculty we have here.”
Over the past three months Mrs. Barr has made an impact on the school community. In September, Director of Development Liz Murphy held a reception at her home where Mrs. Barr met local Worcester leaders and educators including Bishop McManus, Mayor Joe Petty, and several local college presidents. “I am thrilled to accept the position of Head of School for Notre Dame Academy,” said Mrs. Barr. “I am so impressed by the faculty, staff, and students that I have come to know and love over these past three months. Coming into this position at such a time of growth for the school – with the addition of a 7th and 8th grade – is extremely exciting, and I’m eager to continue to build upon the great work and mission of the Sisters of Notre Dame de Namur.”
Mrs. Barr currently resides in Providence, Rhode Island with her husband Tom, a mathematician; they have three grown children.
