The guidance department offers group programs and seminars that serve the developmental needs of each class. These programs are as follows:
Freshman Orientation
The Freshman Orientation program is integrated into the religious studies curriculum. The focus for Grade 9 students is to become academically and socially adjusted to the school community. Students participate in workshops and exercises designed to assist them in developing their relationships with faculty, guidance personnel, and the entire student body. The counselor also works with Grade 9 teachers to reinforce and strengthen necessary study habits and teaming skills and to help students recognize the importance of personal responsibility and initiative.923 Sophomore Seminar
During one term, grade 10 students explore the concept of work - both in relation to the students' personal goals and in the context of work as a vocation. Students do a career assessment that delineates areas of strength, interest, and ability. They then research several careers through print materials and computer resources, presenting an oral report to their seminar group. The role of women in the workplace is examined, and career women are invited to speak to the class. A counselor meets with each student to review the student's career exploration and goals.933 Junior Seminar
During this year students begin their college search. They familiarize themselves with the College Board and American College Test programs and plan their spring and fall testing. They also research colleges through printed materials and NDA's computer programs and learn about the procedures and guidelines for the college application process. Students evaluate themselves, reflect on past and present experiences, and assess how and why they are making decisions for the future. The student and counselor then develop a possible list of colleges to visit. In the spring, parents attend an informational meeting with counselors to discuss the college search process. Periodic newsletters are sent to parents through senior year with up-to-date information and a suggested time-line for the steps in applying to college.943 Senior Seminar
Students continue the college application process with special emphasis on understanding the admissions process, completing applications, writing college essays, and interviewing. Students also receive financial aid information and forms, and parents of all classes are invited to a financial aid meeting to develop an understanding of the process and to facilitate completing forms. A counselor also meets with each senior and her parents for a complete review of the process and to gain greater understanding of the student's objectives and potential.
