701 Drawing and Painting

Students learn free-hand sketching techniques using charcoal, pencil, crayon, pen and ink, and pastels. They paint with tempera, watercolor, and acrylic media. Creative expression is stressed as students use design principles to arrange line, form, color, and texture. Visual perspective and color theory are introduced. Subject matters include still life, landscapes, figure drawing, and portraits. Realism, Impressionism, Cubism, and Abstract Expressionism are among the art styles explored through museum tours and art prints.705 Graphic Design

In this class elements of composition and color theory are combined with the study and application of typography in solving various design problems. Students explore relief, intaglio, and serigraph printing processes. Photography, layout, inking, and paste-up techniques are introduced. Students learn calligraphy as well as the manipulation of computer type as they develop an appreciation of type as an art form. Students produce posters, cards, monograms, and signs as they learn design principles.708 Three Dimensional Design

Three Dimensional Design is an investigation of sculptural concepts, techniques, media, tools, and vocabulary in order to develop students' sculptural skills and visual perception. The course involves exposure to sculptural concepts, traditional materials, technical information and personal expression. The students will work with contemporary materials such as wood, metals, plaster, plastics, styrofoam, wire, clay, and many other cardboard basic materials suitable for creative design projects.

In this art survey course, art history provides the inspiration to explore many different forms of artistic expression. After students see examples of art ranging from cave painting to contemporary art; they produce similar artwork. Charcoal, pencil and pastel drawings, watercolor and acrylic painting, sculpture, prints, ceramics, and mosaics are among the various media studied. Museum tours and art images enhance art appreciation. With extra study, students may elect to take the Advanced Placement Art History test at the completion of the course.
