419 Latin Studies 1

This course develops the ability to read and understand simple Latin. The study of Latin forms and syntax enhances the understanding of the structure of language while the study of Latin vocabulary expands English vocabulary through the study of roots and derivatives. Topics in classical mythology and Roman culture and history reinforce and amplify themes introduced in Grade 9 history, arts, and English courses.429 Latin Studies 2

This course is a continuation of Latin Studies 1.436 Latin Literature 1
Elective /Full credit / Honors / Grades 11, 12
This course, intended for students who have completed the Latin Studies I and II program, continues the study of Latin forms, syntax, and vocabulary while it introduces students to the works of several major Roman writers: Cicero, Caesar, Catullus, and Horace. Students continue their study of topics in Roman culture and history that relate to the Latin literature they are reading. Students are also introduced to Medieval Latin songs and poetry.446 Latin Literature 2
Elective / Full credit / Honors / Grade 12
This course continues the study of the Latin language and of ancient Roman literature in its Golden Age. Each term, students study in depth the life and major works of the following authors: Cicero, Caesar, Ovid, and Vergil. The students become familiar with the major genres of Roman literature: epic poetry, letters, essays, speeches, lyric poetry, and history.
