French
All French courses are offered for full credit. Placement is by examination and departmental approval.


412 French 1
Honors
French 1 is an introductory course for students who have had little or no French. Basic grammatical structures, vocabulary, verb forms, and idiomatic expressions are introduced. Emphasis is placed on developing basic communication skills in spoken and written French. French culture is introduced through appropriate readings, projects, and class presentations.

421 French 2
Advanced
This course continues to focus on communication skills through the study of grammar, continued vocabulary acquisition, expanded conversation, and controlled and original composition. Students are expected to develop their listening and reading skills and to continue the study of French culture. This course is open to students who have demonstrated a certain proficiency in spoken and written French and have been recommended by the teacher.

422 French 2
Honors
French 2 continues to focus on communication skills through the study of grammar, continued vocabulary acquisition, expanded conversation, and controlled and original composition. Speaking and listening skills are practiced and the students continue to study French culture through readings, video, and teacher presentation.

431 French 3
Advanced
This course develops students' conversational and writing skills and focuses on their usage of advanced grammatical constructions. Short stories, magazine articles, and films are used as a basis for discussion, composition, and the study of culture.

432 French 3
Honors
In French 3, students are encouraged to develop their proficiency in French through correct usage of grammatical structures and vocabulary. This course focuses on students' oral and written expression. Students read short stories and magazine articles to stimulate conversation.

441 French 4
Advanced
This course emphasizes proficiency in the oral and written language through the study of grammar and literature. Students are introduced to many different aspects of French culture through videos, tapes, and authentic French realia. This course is for the student with a solid foundation in French. Oral and written presentations are required. Seniors exhibiting high proficiency in language use may be invited by the department to prepare for the AP exam upon completion of the course. Preparation for the AP exam would require extra study on the part of the student under the guidance of the teacher.

442 French 4
Honors
French 4 is designed for the student who wishes to become more proficient in French, but who needs additional review and reinforcement in grammar, speaking, and writing. The students continue their study of French culture and civilization through readings, projects, and films.

451 French 5
Advanced
AP Exams are offered in this course.
French 5 emphasizes proficiency in the oral and written language. Students are exposed to selected readings in addition to rigorous AP exam preparation. Class discussion and vocabulary study promote fluency. Compositions and oral presentations are required. Students may take the AP exam upon completion of this course.

452 French 5
An AP Examination is offered in this course.
This course emphasizes proficiency in the oral and written language through the study of grammar and literature.
